What if we reimagined Pier 48, an industrial shipping pier on the Seattle waterfront, into a restoration focused nursery? Could this nursery also engage the public with the industrial history of the city, encourage people to take action in industrial processes of restoration, and promote a vibrant community?

This project envisions the use of a modular nursery to grow terrestrial and aquatic plants for use in the restoration of estuaries across the Salish Sea. An array of planting pods house different species according to their location and elevation on the site. Once mature, these species are loaded onto barges and shipped to estuaries for restoration projects across the region. Through this program the site is able to utilize Seattle’s industrial past in order to restore the immediate area by providing habitat suitable for migrating salmon, and over time restore other important ecosystems in the Pacific Northwest.

This was a team project with one other team member. We chose to work together for this studio, and together were able to get a grasp on a massive, five-plus acre site that we expanded across the entire region.
