Concrete Studio: The Promenade

Architecture Studio Project
Precast Concrete Studio
University of Washington, Winter 2018
This studio asked us to imagine a building, made of precast concrete, designed to be used in a variety of ways for a potentially unknow future.

The Promenade rethinks the parking garage for the future: it is a park, winter-garden, and performance hall. This is primarily a place to perform; to see and be seen. It has places for professionals, amateurs, and unwitting passers-by to be a part of performance, and anyone can sit and watch, thereby making this corner of Roosevelt more interesting, as well as safer. The street is the unsanctioned stage, the park is a cozier space, open air to allow a variety of performances, and the hall is a grander, sanctioned space for a variety of concerts and performances. This project is also a habitat for any creature that can live in the greenery growing throughout. The planter wall is the biggest statement, which integrates planting into a massive, custom-built pre-cast concrete wall. The plants and animals who live here are also on show, and it is hoped that this will be habitat for all, now and into the future.
